Who’s that other guy?

Just in case anyone get's confused, I'm not the only person posting. All entries are currently prefixed with {Author} wrote: where the author in my case is, of course, IfElse.

The other guy posting, currently going by the handle "The Other Guy", is my brother… so don't worry, it's not a case of schizophrenia.

A group of elephants went into a bar…

BBC News:

Four wild elephants drunk on rice beer have been electrocuted in the north-east Indian state of Meghalaya, wildlife officials report.

The elephants are known to have a taste for rice beer brewed by tribal communities across north-east India. But this is the first time some of them have died after consuming the drink.

A herd of about 20 to 25 elephants went on the rampage in a remote area in the West Garo Hills district earlier this week after getting high on the beer. As panicky villagers fled for cover, leaving behind their freshly brewed beverage, the elephants drank to their heart's content. The inebriated elephants then struck an electric pole and brought it down. But their trunks took the brunt of the shock from the high-tension wire.

Mind those paper cuts…

An old article but a nice one. Posted more for my own benefit than anything else, this article presents a taxonomy of logo design.

Solid Smoke

NY Times article on Aerogel

"It has 14 Guinness Book of World Records-type properties," Dr. Tsou said. "It's the lowest density of any solid, and it has the highest thermoinsulation properties. Though it would be very expensive, you could take a two- or three-bedroom house, insulate it with aerogel, and you could heat the house with a candle. But eventually the house would become too hot."

It also has incredible compressive strength. "It can take 2,000 times its body weight without damage," Dr. Tsou said. NASA's Web site shows a 2-gram cube of aerogel (less than 0.1 ounce) supporting a 2.5-kilogram brick (about 5.5 pounds).

Because of its ability to keep electronics on both the 1997 Mars Pathfinder and the current rover, Spirit, at room temperature in the face of minus-100-degree cold, aerogel will probably remain the insulator of choice on Mars missions for some time, Dr. Tsuyuki said.
