I'm guessing that the version number hike is more of a reflection of the major changes to the language than a marketing trick. Slightly ridiculous, but preferable to the alternatives (J2SE 1.5, J5SE, J2SE 2.0, etc). Still, I do wish they would cut out the hyperbole.
