Google Adsense goes bad

Jennifer Slegg has a nice entry on Google's beta rollout of rich media ads [via].

Google AdSense is moving beyond the traditional text and graphical advertising to rich media, including interstitials, expanding ads and floating ads.

If AdSense offered rich media to all publishers, it could really hurt competitor companies offering similar rich media ad formats because of the vast number of publishers that AdSense has.

And if AdSense did offer rich media to all publishers, they could easily add a new clause that would mean companies such as Fastclick and PointRoll would suddenly be competitive ads and not be permitted on the same pages as AdSense.

I'm not going to comment too much on this right now but I'll just say that you won't be seeing such ads on this site. Interstitials, expanding ads and floating ads are precisely the type of ads that I avoided; there's no way I'm going to be inflicting them on anyone reading this site.

That’s a shame. I now have adsense ads on my site (I’m going to post about it soon), and as such they are the only ads I don’t block, but if this gets too bad I will have to start blocking them as well.

It’ll be up to the site owner as to what sort of ad to use; that should mitigate a lot of the possible disruption.

[…] If Google insist on those fancy rich media, interstitials, expanding ads and floating ads then I shall be turning off adsense on my sites. No responses to ‘Not a chance’. RSS feed for comments and Trackback URI. […]
